~Ayurveda and Yoga as an alternative lifestyle.

‘Focus…’ the yoga teacher pointed at his nose, urging me to breathe through it, not my mouth. His eyes locked onto mine in a room bustling with yoga students, he was a slender middle-aged man with not an ounce of excess weight. It was the crack of dawn, and I had mustered the courage to attend the yoga class, determined to embrace the routines prescribed by the Somatheeram Ayurvedic Hospital and Yoga Center where I had arrived just the day before.

I understand that ‘yoga’ signifies union with the absolute or experiencing oneness. But understanding and practice were two distinct realms. On rare occasions I would practice a few postures, but I knew my body was never flexible. Yet here I was amidst seasoned yoga enthusiasts from across the globe, at the esteemed Somatheeram retreat.

With a gentle hint from the teacher, a revelation dawned upon me: the invaluable role of a guide in life’s journey. Simply gathering knowledge from various social media outlets isn’t always the path to true understanding. It struck me that my habit of breathing through my mouth when tired might be linked to a host of other health issues. In that moment, I recognized the profound wisdom of seeking guidance from experienced mentors, both in yoga and in life.

After a month-long adventure in India, I had been looking forward to indulging in a few days of bliss in Chowara near Trivandrum, Kerala. Without a doubt, it turned out to be the highlight of my entire vacation. It had been far too long since I had taken the time to pamper myself, and Chowara offered the perfect opportunity to do just that.

I traveled from Bhubaneswar to Trivandrum with a long overnight layover in Chennai, arriving at dawn. As I stepped off the plane, fatigue weighed heavily on me from the lack of sleep, but I was eager for the sanctuary awaiting me at the center. Having done only minimal research, I anticipated a place of relaxation and rejuvenation.

I sensed we moved from city to village during my drive from the airport. The driver cruised through empty roads and we reached the center in less than half an hour. At first glance the center appeared unassuming from the outside, but the reception area exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere. With its aesthetically furnished decor, infused with an ethnic touch and minimalist design, it immediately set the tone for a tranquil stay.

I was greeted with a fresh jasmine flower garland and coconut water. Unlike the rigid check-in policies of typical hotels, the staff here graciously accommodated my early arrival and swiftly handed over the key to my room. With warm hospitality, a slender attendant effortlessly carried both of my luggage pieces while guiding me to my temporary abode.

As we walked I noticed there was no typical hotel lobby or elevator. Instead, we strolled along a paved path amidst the greenery, with birds singing and neatly manicured gardens filled with a variety of fruits and flowers. The rustic style thatched roof small cottages were nestled in the slopes of the hillock. The landscape canvas painted a rich village life. The tranquil setting was made even more peaceful by the sight and sound of the nearby sea, its waves adding a soothing backdrop to our surroundings. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, a tranquil oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

After unpacking, showering quickly, and setting my alarm, I laid down for a moment and unintentionally fell asleep before I suddenly remembered I needed to check in at their hospital by 10 am. As I prepared to walk up the stairs, I realized (to give the reader some context) that this almost surreal village was perched atop a hill. With the reception at the summit and the sea below, my cottage nestled in the middle. Regardless of which direction I chose it meant ascending or descending over 100 steps.

Upon reaching the hospital reception I noticed a sizable group of guests all clad in their distinctive red robes, patiently seated in the waiting area. A fleeting thought crossed my mind: had I overlooked reading their welcome package and missed out on my robe? Nevertheless, I quietly took my place among them until I was called in. I observed that the majority of guests had traveled from various countries around the world. Later on I discovered that some of them were returning guests, while others had been referred by friends. For some it was merely a curiosity to delve into India’s ancient wisdom.

When my turn came, I was ushered into a room where I met two doctors. After exchanging pleasant greetings, they proceeded to check my vitals. Following this, I had to fill out an extensive questionnaire. The senior doctor then conducted ‘nadi chikitsa,’ a prominent method used in Ayurveda. Checking my nerves the first thing she asked was if I was a perfectionist. That blew my mind and I was sold then and there into the program. How could she possibly read with such accuracy?

I was informed about the imbalance in my body between vata, pitta, and kapha, along with recommendations on how to adjust my diet accordingly. I also received guidance on which yoga classes to attend and the timing of my daily treatments. Then I was introduced to my therapist, Aneesha, a short lady with a pleasant smile. She escorted me to the women’s treatment quarters. En route she pointed out the dining hall, Ayurveda shop, and yoga center.

I had enrolled in a rejuvenation program that included a standard set of treatments to follow throughout my stay. Each day after checking my vitals the doctor would guide the therapist, who would then adjust her approach accordingly. Before the treatment began the therapists would invoke Dhanwantari, the God of Ayurveda. Dhanwantari is revered as an incarnation of Vishnu. I relished every moment of my time at the treatment center, indulging in massages with herbal oil and mud followed by soothing herbal baths. It felt like experiencing the ultimate pampering, reminiscent of the care one receives as a baby. Somatheeram houses a competent set of Ayurvedic doctors and therapists.

After my treatment sessions I would make my way to the dining hall for lunch. Unlike the hustle and bustle of many dining areas, this space exuded a certain calm. It was an open wooden structure with a thatched roof, offering panoramic views of the sea. Each day a freshly prepared array of Kerala delicacies awaited us for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meals were not only delicious, but also tailored to cater to the specific doshas of the guests with plenty of fruits and juices available. Kerala’s cuisine is renowned for its use of coconut in various forms. Local people have no doubt the best hair and skin as coconut has the best nourishing properties for them. During lunch hour, I noticed most guests enjoyed their meals quietly, still absorbing the benefits of the massage they had received prior to it. Some even chuckled at their own slight limps, evidence of the thorough care provided by the masseuses.

After relishing a satisfying meal, I would return to my room and allow some time to pass before taking a shower, following the customary practice after an oil massage. During this interval I engaged in moments of reflection, delving into reading and writing. The room itself was a delightful circular cottage, featuring four windows adorning one half of its walls which permitted ample sunlight and enchanting views of the garden. Its decor embraced minimalism, with essentials like a mosquito net-covered bed,  side table,  writing desk and chair, and open closet. While some cottages boasted brick walls, mine exuded rustic charm with a stone facade. The dark-colored concrete flooring added an ancient allure to the space, complemented by a life-sized mirror seamlessly integrated into one wall. The bathroom offered modern amenities while retaining its traditional Indian aesthetic. Fortunately, the cottage was equipped with both a fan and an air conditioning unit, a welcome relief given that the onset of summer had already begun in Kerala which made the heat quite intolerable. I slept like a baby after my shower on most days. I’m certain other guests did the same, especially with the sun at its peak and the coastal breeze carrying a humid touch. But I used to wake up appreciating my supple skin, feeling as smooth as a baby’s. All that oil was definitely at work.

A typical day at the retreat was filled with enriching activities, starting with morning yoga and pranayama and followed by a hearty breakfast and peaceful meditation. Afterward, a leisurely walk to the hospital for rejuvenating treatments provided a refreshing experience. Lunch was a delightful affair, offering nourishing meals tailored to individual doshas. Following lunch a soothing shower provided relaxation before a well-deserved rest. Evenings were spent enjoying dinner and engaging in socializing with fellow guests, creating lasting memories and connections. A few venture out in the evening for sightseeing.

On the third day of my stay, I encountered a setback as I developed a cold, accompanied by fever and severe body aches. This unexpected illness dampened my spirits for the following days, especially as the stubborn cough persisted. I struggled to discern the cause of this sudden ailment, speculating whether it was a result of the body adjusting to numerous changes such as dietary adjustments, humid weather, strenuous walks,  increased sweating, and various other factors. Despite my concerns, I made a conscious effort to limit my interactions with others, mindful of the possibility of spreading any potential virus.

I mostly spent my evenings in the dining hall, mingling with guests. Once I ventured out to visit the famous Padmanavam temple. It is the richest temple in India and boasts its beauty with stone carving pillars. I stopped by at the golden sand Kovalam beach. I had never felt this fine sand before. Another day I strolled in the nearby street which had many stores for clothing and jewelry. For women, shopping is therapeutic. Given my spirit was off with sickness splurging a little was uplifting.

During my time at the center I had the pleasure of forming meaningful connections with fellow guests. Whether solo travelers, couples, or groups of friends, there was a diverse mix of individuals. It was evident that this wasn’t a resort designed for children, but rather a space for adults seeking rejuvenation and healing. I cherished the friendships that blossomed during my stay, each one leaving a lasting impression on me.

One couple from Barcelona stood out with their warmth and instant companionship, offering comforting gestures during moments of illness. Another guest from the US exuded positivity and resilience, while a friend from Austria showed a deep appreciation for Indian culture and food. Amidst diverse backgrounds, including companions from Kenya, London, Germany, and France, I found a sense of belonging. As days passed, more familiar faces joined, each representing a unique corner of the globe and fostering a growing sense of home amidst newfound friendships. I am grateful for each connection forged during my time at the retreat.

The center hosted various cultural events throughout the week, including Kathakali performances, live music featuring traditional flute melodies, Bollywood movie screenings, pottery making sessions, and henna painting. The staff were exceptionally warm and hospitable, greeting guests with smiles whether they were serving in the dining hall or tending to the gardens. I was particularly impressed with the room service, as they always left behind beautiful towel art and fresh flowers, adding a special touch to each visit.

Azhimalathara Beach, located near the retreat, offers a refreshing escape for those who enjoy swimming or simply wish to cool off from the heat. For me, even the leisurely stroll along the shoreline proved to be rewarding, with the soothing sound of the waves acting as a healing balm for my soul. On any given day, temple chimes from afar, church bells, the rhythmic songs of fishermen spreading their nets, and the calls of seagulls added music to the experience. The gentle symphony of nature enhances the serenity, captivating my senses with its vast expanse.

Ayurveda is an alternative medicine practice mainly rooted in the Indian subcontinent. Its holistic approach is to balance doshas – vata, pitta, kapha- in the body. These imbalances can be examined by a trained practitioner by reading pulses. It’s treatments include predominantly herbal medicines, special diets, meditation, yoga, and herbal oil massage. Medicine preparations are typically based on complex herbal compounds coming from different parts of plants starting from roots to barks. According to Ayurveda suppressing natural urges is unhealthy and leads to illness. To satisfy tastebuds ayurveda does not promote processed food. In my simple belief, in the process of creation the Creator has provided us with bountiful natural sources for our well-being. We just need to understand them and believe them.

One day I scheduled a visit to the kitchen. The chef politely walked me through their neatly maintained kitchen, cold storage inventory, spice corridor, etc and at the end treated me with a glass of fresh juice. Another day I joined a small group to visit their production facility for medicines. The tour guide was one of Ayurvedic doctors who diligently explained each step involved in making the medicines that are used for the guests. From the procurement of raw materials to prepping to processing the medicine either for powder or to make oil, each phase goes through thorough quality checks and is labor intensive. Preparing the medicinal oils involves an even more complex process, brewing over a few days in 200 to 300-liter capacity vessels. Even the traditional boiling method uses special wood logs made from tamarind trees. This production facility only prepares for the guests staying at the Somatheeram center.

My maternal granduncles Kaviraj Anant Tripathy Sharma and Kaviraj Krushna Chandra Tripathy Sharma were pioneers in reviving Ayurveda in Odisha. I have memories of visiting their production facilities as a child and using alternative medicines on many occasions growing up. So I always believed in our ancient wisdom. The seed of faith in our ancient wisdom is already deep-rooted. Now this special visit to the production center made me appreciate their commitment to provide a truly immersive and authentic Ayurvedic experience that left a lasting impression.

In the midst of the night, as I journeyed to the airport, I found myself immersed in reflection. Despite the challenging weather and my illness, I felt rejuvenated rather than miserable. This holistic experience left a profound impact on both my body and mind. It served as a reminder of the significant role our mindset, attitude, and expectations play in shaping our experiences. By approaching this place with an open mind, surrendering to the process, and maintaining zero expectations, I was able to fully appreciate the journey. Embracing the nurturing environment and allowing myself to be pampered like a child yielded unexpected and remarkable results, surpassing even my wildest imagination. To me, this place resembles an upscale hermitage, offering a disciplined life and serving as a precursor to an inward journey. (Stay during 2025)

On my last day, during dinner, I took a moment to capture a few cherished memories with friends on camera. As I quietly bid farewell to the Somatheeram center, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude and longing until the next time I return.
